New Bedford woman assaults mail carrier for skipping her house

NEW BEDFORD — A Holly Street woman struck a letter carrier with a flurry of punches Wednesday after he apparently skipped her house because she was following him and he had no idea who she was.

Bobbie-Jo Cunningham, 34, was not arrested but likely will be summonsed on a simple assault charge after police said she screamed at the mail carrier and then struck him repeatedly. The mail carrier was not injured, said Detective Capt. Steven Vicente, head of the major crimes unit.

The woman, without identifying herself, apparently started following the carrier because she was awaiting two packages. The carrier, in an effort to get the woman to stop following him closely, walked past her house and delivered mail until she walked away down the street, police said. He then walked back to her house and delivered two packages, Vicente said.

The woman then punched him repeatedly, Vicente said.
