Lawrence man charged with smashing mail truck windows with bat

LAWRENCE — Police arrested a 19-year-old Lawrence man for allegedly smashing the windows of a U.S. Postal Service delivery truck with an aluminium baseball bat.

Brian G. Brito was charged with malicious destruction of property of more than $250 and assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

Officer Ariel A. Montas responded to 330 Howard St. shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, he noticed the passenger side window of a mail truck had been destroyed and the front windshield appeared to be struck with what appeared to be a baseball bat several times, the officer wrote in his report.

A postal worker told Montas that a rock struck his windshield while he was sorting the mail, but he didn’t see who threw it. His supervisor told him to continue delivering a package to a home nearby.

When the postal worker returned to the truck, he noticed that all of the windows had been damaged. Several children told the postal worker they saw somebody strike the truck’s windows with a baseball bat and run up Howard Street. Two men who overheard the children, later approached a man wielding an aluminum bat in a convenience store two blocks away.

“They asked the suspect if he had broken the windows and he told them he had,” Montas wrote in his report.

The two men returned to the mail truck and told the postal worker, who then contacted police.

Montas said he went to the convenience store and noticed a man, later identified as Brito, swinging an an aluminum bat. The officer said he ordered the man to put the bat down and then arrested him.

Children who told police they witnessed the vandalism later identified Brito as the man who smashed the windows on the mail truck, according to Montas.
