Here are some useful Registry edits I've accumulated or created over the years. Although I have tested them, I cannot guarantee that they will work on your computer. YOU USE THESE STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. You should back up your Registry before you use these - an article on how to do that is here. This article has links in it to several Microsoft articles - select the one appropriate to your version of Windows. The Microsoft articles may state something like, 'Do not follow these steps to export a whole registry hive (for example,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE). If you must back up whole registry hives, back up
the whole registry instead.' You will be able to restore the Registry more easily if you ignore that advice and back up each hive individually (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS, and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - these names may vary depending on your version of Windows).
New Daylight Saving Time Rules
Some countries (most notably, the U.S., Canada, Uruguay, Brazil, Israel, Egypt, and Sri Lanka) have adopted different Daylight Saving Time rules or different time zones this year. If you use Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista, you can get the patch either through Automatic Updates or Windows Update, but what if you have Windows 2000 or Windows 2000 Server? I created these Registry edits from the Microsoft Knowledge Base article and they worked fine on my computer - you use them at your own risk.
USING THEM ON EARLIER VERSIONS OF WINDOWS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK and you should be on a more secure version of Windows anyways. There are no more security updates available from Microsoft for Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95. Copies of Windows 2000 are available cheaply on eBay - if your computer won't run Windows 2000 you should buy a newer and faster computer.
