i used to carry when i was going to unm - i had a job that required large cash bank deposits - but i had to rely on others that would not show up on time - could not make the bank run - had to be at class on time. Thus, carry pistol to protect my job and my employers money.
however, if i were a student today the above excuse would not matter - i would carry to protect myself and others from the very rare crazy - person

So much for the new texting warning system! It was never utilized and quite frankly I'm **** that I was not warned that potentially armed student was in the same building with me!!! How dare UNM withhold such information to protect face and justify the increase of tuition this fall! Rotten! Just freaking rotten!

I'm glad they didn't use the text system. That is not what it was designed for. Nobody saw him carrying a gun around campus... he was not on the loose, the police moved in quickly and did their job. I would be **** if the text system were used for this because it seems highly inappropriate. It would make me want to unsubscribe from the service.

Hope this young man is going to get a psychiatric evaluation. From all that I have read in the Daily Lobo and other online sources, he appears to need one. He seems to have anger issues and has made some unusual statements.

The picture of him smiling like a Cheshire Cat when he was arrested speaks volumes about his mental instability. Most kid's would have been in a state of shock.

I know this kid, he collects guns, so do I. There is no crime in that. Yes he was stupid and should be punished for bringing them onto campus, but he has never made any kind of threats or behaved in any way indicative of homicidal behavior. This whole thing has been blown way out of proportion due to someone who was angry. If you don't believe that, then I put this question to you: The call was that he had brought weapons into his room, but when it was searched they weren't there.

Well, guns on campus are illegal and he should be held accountable for taking guns to his room on campus if it is established beyond a reasonable doubt. Unfortunately it sounds like the campus police only captured statements from other students who "turned" their colleague in stating that he had guns on campus. Why did they not call when the guns were on campus. The crime may not result in a conviction. The nazi literature, references to Columbine and statements that he could do a better job than other mass murderers, unfortunately, are behaviors that are not all that uncommon among adolescent and post adolescent American males trying to impress themselves and others. The real balance is to differentiate between guys intentionally getting him in trouble with their statements, and a truly dangerous student with criminal pathology. Good luck to the DA's office to do the right thing, for UNM and for the UNM student who is accused.
Good work though, to take it seriously, find the weapons, then move to prevent a possible crime by arrest. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I agree with Elizabeth. Everyone needs to wait until all of the facts are out. This kid is guilty of making a mistake by bringing guns on campus, but we need to hear his side of the story. He does not have anger issues, he's a teenage boy...he got mad at a video game, so what? He locked his food up...not crazy, try living at the dorms and having people eat all of your food. Don't judge this book by the cover. Let's wait until the whole truth is known before we make any assumptions of mass murder.

Kevin is not mentally unstable...He's a sweet kid who made an **** remark...and nowhere does it say that he made that comment recently. For all we know, he could have made that comment last year...It's because someone freaked out that he had guns on campus that the comment even resurfaced. Plain and simple, Kevin is not a killer, and Kevin is not a bad guy. He's just a guy who made an extremely silly decision.

If you look at it though, how many of you have lived in the dorms and taken something in you shouldn't have? You know, you aren't even supposed to have candles in there. This is this kids' home. He took something that belonged to him to his home without second thought of the consequences. And so we start a witch hunt. Fantastic americans and their silly terrorism scandals.

Wow what is wrong with this world? I cannot believe people are saying it was blown out of proportion it's that kind of attitude, with no regard for others, that lets these things occur. Yeah people bring items into their rooms that they shouldn't,but a gun is one thing that should never be taken in. Especially when that person has made violent remarks, threats and possesses an ak-47 (even if it wasn't found on campus)! come on...lets be real...he deserved the arrest and all of the charges given. I am glad someone had the courage to speak up before something horrible did happen.
