CNS members visit renowned fortune teller

Chiang Mai _ Senior members of the Council for National Security (CNS) yesterday headed for Chiang Mai to see renowned fortune teller Varin Buaviratlert.

A source said Ajarn Varin, of Sukhito astrologer's house, opened the Grandfather Thewaran Hermit Shrine especially for a ceremony to ward off bad luck for the coup makers.

It was said the hermit spirit would possess the fortune teller, making the ceremony even more powerful.

The trip was led by CNS secretary-general and defence permanent secretary Gen Winai Phattiyakul and CNS deputy chief and air force chief ACM Chalit Phukphasuk.

The source said Mr Varin has been CNS chairman Sonthi Boonyaratkalin's personal fortune teller for some time now. Although the army chief is a Muslim, he paid heed to the fortune teller's advice and predictions.

But Gen Sonthi was nowhere to be seen yesterday. His wife, Mrs Piyada, was there on his behalf.

This was the second visit since the coup. The first was shortly after Sept 19, and made to allay fears held by some council members that their efforts to tackle problems plaguing the country could face unexpected obstacles.

Mr Varin gained Gen Sonthi's trust and became his personal seer after he correctly foretold his appointment as chief of the Special Forces Command and then army chief.
