Complaint about accessibility to Seymour post office investigated

Seymour resident Joseph Luciano has filed a complaint with the United States Postal Service that its post office in Seymour is not handicapped-accessible. Contributed

SEYMOUR — The U.S. Access Board is investigating a complaint from a local man concerning handicapped accessibility at the post office.

Resident Joseph A. Luciano filed a complaint Oct. 1 against the post office because there is no way for someone in a wheelchair to get into the building. The federal agency will look into the complaint and see whether it falls under the Architectural Barriers Act. The act dictates that federal buildings constructed after 1968 comply with accessibility standards for the disabled. The Seymour Post Office was built in 1916.

Officials at the post office previously said there is a phone number exclusively for disabled customers to call the postmaster and make an appointment for curbside or sidewalk service.

The elderly and disabled can also use online postal services, officials said.

Luciano also filed a complaint Wednesday under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which states that no one can be denied USPS benefits because of a disability.

The postmaster has 15 days to acknowledge the complaint. If the complaint is not resolved locally within 30 days, USPS must send Luciano a written interim report explaining the status of the informal complaint and proposed resolution.

USPS must make a final decision on the complaint within 60 days.

" There’s no truth to the postal officials’ claim that “. . . there is a phone number exclusively for disabled customers to call the postmaster and make an appointment for curbside or sidewalk service.” The phone number given to me is 203/888-3830. This is the main number which postal workers use constantly. So it is usually busy when we old folks in wheelchairs are outside shivering and calling that “dedicated number—which is usually busy. Busy! We have to ask customers who can climb the steps to tell the workers cozy and warm inside that there are old disabled customers outside needing services.
Furthermore, the postmaster refuses to post signage outside that tells other old disabled folks the number to call for “sidewalk service.” "
