Public Libraries Singapore Launching Book Exchange: April 25 2009

Public Libraries Singapore will be launching the inaugural Book Exchange on 25 April at The Plaza, National Library Building, 100 Victoria Street. This event enables the public to exchange their used books with other book lovers so as to recycle their books and share their love for reading with one another.

Held in conjunction with the World Book Day, the initiative will give used books a new lease of life and further promote a reading culture among the public. The Public Libraries hope that the Book Exchange will encourage Singaporeans to proactively build a self-sustaining learning community through reading and sharing.

From 11 to 24 April 2009, 11am to 8pm, the public can drop off their used books at any Public Library in return for book exchange coupons, which will indicate a one-for-one exchange. The books accepted for participation are children’s and adults’ fiction and non-fiction books in any of the four official languages. These exclude textbooks, magazines and audio-visual items. The public can bring their book exchange coupons on 25 April to the Book Exchange to redeem used books dropped off by other book lovers. Each person can exchange up to a maximum of 30 used books at the event, which will be held at The Plaza, National Library Building, from 10.30am to 6pm.

“This inaugural Book Exchange is in line with the Library2010 vision to nurture a society of life-long learners. We encourage all Singaporeans to take part in this event and continue to read and broaden their perspectives. With nationwide initiatives like the Book Exchange, we hope to bring Singaporeans together to share resources with one another and cultivate a passion for continual learning, especially during this economic downturn,” said Dr N Varaprasad, Chief Executive, National Library Board (NLB).

The Book Exchange is also in line with the government’s move to encourage Singaporeans to adopt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle by incorporating green practices, such as recycling and minimising wastage, as part of their daily lives. To complement this recycling intent, no carrier bags will be provided at the Book Exchange and the public is advised to bring along their own bags.

As part of NLB’s Corporate Volunteerism Programmes to promote the spirit of volunteerism in the organisation, this initiative will involve NLB staff as volunteers contributing back to society by facilitating the exchange of books, and promoting the culture of lifelong learning and reading.
