  A Survey of Embedded Thumbnails
A collection of random JPEG images from the Internet whose embedded thumbnails show unexpected pictures.

  Manipulated Images
I didn't expect to find this type of image, since it was generally theorized that only quick, minor changes to images would cause the thumbnail to get out of sync. It's fun to see the original image after filters have been applied, I must say.

  Date Stamp
This one has had a date stamp applied, most likely by the camera. It's interesting (although perfectly sensible) that the stamp was not applied to the thumbnail.

  Drop Shadow
A drop shadow and copyright message have been applied.

  Strange Coloring
Some color-pallete-tweaking filter has been used. The identity of the subject is somewhat obscured by the modifications. This got me to thinking about people blurring out faces to protect identities, and being foiled by the out of sync thumbnail. Hmm.

  Stained Glass Effect
Here's another where our thumbnail is much better for identification purposes.

  The Boot
This boot has been cut out, flipped and had the brightness adjusted.

  Rounded
I actually found two images with this effect, and I seem to have lost one. Oh well.

  Montage
The thumbnail on this really helps to see the image buried in the background of this montage.

  Drunk Photographer
This one has been tweaked to disguise the fact that the photographer was highly intoxicated.

  Hoax
Hey, maybe this stupid project has a productive use: uncovering hoaxes. This one's probably just a joke, and not really a hoax, but the potential for spoiling pranksters should be apparent.

  Fake LCD
The LCD display has been added in. This probably came from a page selling this product. Raises interesting questions about how much modification of an image to help sell it is ethical. This might be another productive use of this technique for locating the 'actual photograph.'
