Pridiyathorn: No need to replace Somkid

There was no need to find a new spokesman on sufficiency economy to replace Somkid Jatusripitak , said Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula Wednesday.

"I and Mr Kosit (Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras) are ready to work on this part so there is no need to appoint a new person to the post," said M.R. Pridiyathorn. "We have done it and have succeeded."

Mr Somkid, former deputy prime minister of Thaksin Shinawatra regime, resigned from the post Wednesday morning, less than a week after he was appointed, after being pressured by anti-Thaksin groups.

M.R. Pridiyathorn added that he was not involved in the resignation of Mr Somkid.

Mr Kosit said he believed Mr Somkid resignation would not have an impact on the work and the image of the government.

"I believe it wouldn't affect investors' confidence because there are a lot of people who understand Thailand now," he said. "For those who don't, we have to explain to them."

Meanwhile, Chart Thai deputy leader Somsak Prisanananthakul expressed his appreciation to Mr Somkid's resignation.

Mr Somsak said he praised Mr Somkid for respecting the feelings of the general public, and this was one of the qualifications of a good politician.

He also defended the Chart Thai leader Banharn Silpa-archa who earlier criticised the government strongly after the appointment of Mr Somkid. He said Mr Banharn was never jealous of him.
