Controversial rally permitted for Saturday

DAILY NEWS STAFF
Saturday may be a controversial day for local residents, with protests and support rallies left and right.
The Jacksonville Police Department issued a public assembly permit Friday to members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., but that action concerned at least one person who went to Tuesday's Jacksonville City Council meeting to make his opinion known.
The primitive Baptist church, headed by Pastor Fred Phelps, is most known for protesting military funerals and anything it perceives as related to homosexuality. It has come to Jacksonville to protest the U.S. Marine Corps, which it says God hates, and issues involving the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.
Scott Peters, a Jacksonville resident, sent out a press release early Tuesday to encourage people to attend the meeting and share their concerns and disapproval of the permit and to offer alternatives. But he appeared to be alone in the audience.
He said during his presentation to the council that it should look at the impact the protesters will have on the community, and it should make people aware of appropriate conduct recommended for onlookers.
Peters also said during the public comment period of the meeting that the area given to the church to protest is not a good area because it could interfere with many city ordinances.
"I am not asking for (the council) to disallow the event," Peters said. "I just want to move the protest to another area where it won't interfere with Jacksonville's daily lives ... like a park."
Kristoff Bauer, Jacksonville's city manager, said the city is prepared for the church group to come and that people should be cautious around them.
Bauer said he agrees with the statement from Col. Adele Hodges when she urged all Marines and sailors to stay away from the demonstration by the church group.
Peters, however, said the city should make sure it has a plan to deal with any Marines that may become enraged by the protest.
"What Col. Hodges said was just a suggestion, not an order," he said. "(The city) needs to be prepared."
Councilman Jerome Willingham said that the group's coming to protest is "troubling and disheartening" and that it is a shame that the church doesn't share the universal courtesy for dignity of loss of life as most of society does.
"We do, however, have to remember that we just celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and at times what he was saying was not welcome," he said. "We must allow the appreciation of the Constitution, even if we don't agree with their message."
Mayor Sammy Phillips said the Constitution does allow people to speak and assemble and he would fight for that right; however, he is a big supporter of the military and is excited about the support for troops rally being held at the same time.
In response to the church's coming to Jacksonville, Chrissy Speelman, 31, Mandie Benson, 26, and Nikki Stahl, 29, all of Jacksonville, organized a Support our Troops rally the same day to offer an alternative.
"(Jacksonville) is our home and we want to do something great," Speelman said.
Stahl said she wants Marines and veterans alike to know that Jacksonville is their city and they are welcome and supported.
The church plans to meet from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hargett Street and Lejeune Boulevard.
The Support our Troops rally is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Jacksonville Commons Park.
In addition, the Gathering of Eagles is holding an Operation Celebration of American Military rally from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 2025 N. Marine Blvd. in Jacksonville.

| I don't like this group and don't think they are even close to be considered a Christian organization however, they have their right to free speech and to gather. Think the City did what was right under the law of the state even if I don't like their decision. |

| What was the Chief of the Jacksonville Police Department thinking when he issued this permit. I believe in free speech but the vile hate and disrespect of our military dead by this group makes my Sicilian blood boil. As a father of to two former Marines I have nothing but comtempt for this group. If this funeral was being held in Brooklyn I would show them some Bensonhurst justice. |

| Fanatics strive for attention. They live from the monies collected by suing cities and towns that refuse or deny a permit. There track record is good, and they are prepared to dish out and spew hatred and disrespect to anyone that will listen. To drown them out? I would say 10-15 Harleys, maybe less, this is a small cowardly group made up of women and younger people, while the men hide on a farm monitoring through a website. I plan to attend, and will keep my distance. I am a proud American that respects the men and women in uniform that provide us our freedom. Sad part is, these clowns picked the wrong town. I am certain the police won't need a water cannon or riot gear to control this. But it would be nice to relieve our bladders on these hateful people, then maybe they will get our message. |

| I say ignore them, don't give them any media attention everyone take a different route rather than this street and I bet they go away. Don't fuel their fire. I think they just want attention. Let's not give them the satisfaction to think they are going to get a rise out of us. We know the truth. Sounds to me like another Jim Jones, wonder if they are going to drink the potion. |

| I can't believe the nerve of these folks from Westboro, What kind of people show up at funerals and rant and rave, This is terrible. And now I see they plan on coming here, to a Military town in which our civilians support our Military. They must be crazy. It is a disgrace to call it a Church, in my Bible a Church is a body of Christians. Maybe some of the true Churches in the area need to show up and bring their music and sing loud enough to block these folks out. First song I suggest is Satan is under my feet. |

| These backward and primitive people from Westboro Baptist Church do not like our Marine Corps. They should move to Somalia or any other third world country. These unamerican hypocrites are cowardly and I resent them being anywhere near our Marines. |

| These people have lost their minds. They are lucky they are playing this little game of theirs in our current super tolerant society. It's only a matter of time before these protestors. Preaching their hate against our brave men and women will be met with an overwhelming force of reality at the hands of our fellow countrymen. I can't wait for this to happen. |

| This is one time I do not agree with freedom of speech. When it is intended to purposely hurt people, then they have no right to speak. These people are not for God. They're just a bunch of inbreads who are trying to get a rise out of people. When they show up at the funerals of fallen soldiers and spew their hatred, it makes me sick. And now they are using the murder of a pregnant woman for their hatred as well. What has become of this society? I wonder if they realize that because our men and women are fighting the war, it gives them the right to act like the cowards and low-lifes they truly are and shame on them and anyone who backs then. I agree with the person who said their permit should have been denied and let them sue. Nothing but pure trash. |

| Forget free speech. This is a military community! This is what the City of Jacksonville thinks about the military. They should have denied it. Then let the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas sue the city. That is one jury I would love to sit on. I think the local military community, and citizens of Onslow County would rally behind the city, if they denied the permit. This is one expenditure the City of Jacksonville should fund, instead of the Bridge to Nowhere. |

| I am truly ill right now really sick to my stomach after googling the WBC and reading the horrifying propaganda contained in their website. PLEASE go to the website. I did not understand why POd Marine said he or she could not put the website in this blog. However I quickly learned why after I found their HOME PAGE and saw what the internet address is. HORRIBLE! If you are unaware these people actually believe that America is villainous and that the American Military has sinned against the WBC and that God is wreaking vengeance for it. Can anyone really stomach this stuff? These people actually celebrate the deaths of our men and women in uniform! How disgusting!
The WBC is a hate group that slings unbelievably rotten propaganda and pickets funerals and other events in order to obtain attention to this propaganda all under the guise of being a religious group. The unfortunate issue is that as long as they have obtained the appropriate permits and they peaceably assemble they do have that right under the United States Constitution. However what amazes me about that is the fact that they believe that God hates America. Does anyone see the irony here?
Please do not give these people what they want which is for us to come out and confront them and give them their platform to preach their beliefs. Instead if you support the Military especially given that this is a Marine Corps town please attend one of the worthwhile Military support rallies that have also been scheduled. Let us ALL ignore these people and show them that we do not care what their opinion is. They just do not matter to us! What goes around comes around and they will get theirs.
Semper Fi and God Bless America! |

| While I don't agree with this particular church, they have the freedom of speech to protest anything they want as long as they don't break any laws. They've applied for and been granted their permit to assemble. As long as they break no laws, what's the big deal?
If you're not interested in what they have to say, ignore them. It's the best way to deal with these types of people. |

| Lets all hope it rains this Sat and drowns these people. I agree the best way to handle this whole thing would be for no one to be in the area and this could very easily turn into a riot in a New York minute. My first thought was to go buy some rotten veggies and just throw them at these people, but DH who is a retired Marine at 30 years will not let me. My advice to everyone is to STAY AWAY. |

| Isnt there some folks from Cherry Point out there with connections to some Suadron COs who could schedule some voluntary weekend flight practice for a couple of pilots. Maybe some AV8 Harriers who need some approach practice into a small airfield such as New River. Or maybe 2 or 3 C46 crews who would like some weekend flight time. |

| If this group was in a certain country that did not allow this they would be taken out back of the building and their right to protest would be ended real quick. So these so-called church people need to get down on their knees and thank God for the military for what they have done and what they continue to do. These men and women deserve the greatest respect anyone can give them, they did not start the war they are being directed to do what they are told to do nothing else. The military men and women follow orders for higher ups and those higher ups are cilivians. That we the people put in office. |

| I just cannot believe Jerome Willingham is still involved in Jacksonvilles politics. People what is wrong with you. Biggest crook, and criminal in the system, has no right to voice an opinion on anything.
Oh my, the world has gone to you know wwhere in a handbasket. |

| Another Citizen and Makes 2, standing there saying that the beliefs of this church are holy is disgusting. Have you been to their site and actually read what they believe? incase you didn't know their site address i encourage you to google them, since I can't type the address in this blog. Now last time I checked religion is that of acceptance and understanding. It also emphasizes tolerance of mankind. Last time I went to Church I was being preached to about the a path of good and salvation which could be found in the Bible. No where in the Bible does it say the things this group preaches. They preach that God is intentionally killing our troops. Our constitution allows freedom of speech and religion, granted. But, the point being made is that they are nothing but a hate group, which could easily be compared as the Ku Klux Klan of Churches. If you can truthfully say they should be able to stand at the Beruit memorial and the cemetary and you do not condem any of their actions, then stand in front of a Marine today and tell them to their face. Stand in front of a Wounded Warrior and tell them your opinion to their face. If you can do that, then by all means go ahead and continue defending this churches right of free speech. Why not just go join their picket line Saturday while you're at it. OR if you decide to be patriotic and support the Marines and what they stand for open your eyes and see what this Cult, or as you say it religion, is really about. I invite you to go to their site and if you can read the whole thing without being disgusted and still think they should be allowed to stand and protest, I hope you go to Heavens Gates with that, because there is a Marine waiting for you there to disagree. |
