El Camino College men's soccer coach John Britton knew goals were going to come at a premium.

But when the Warriors do get a goal, they know how to make it stand up.

Alex Ochoa scored on an assist from Michael Tostado in the 30th minute to propel El Camino to a season-opening 1-0 nonconference win Friday at Chaffey.

"I'm surprised we actually scored," Britton quipped. "It was a good start to the season. Usually we always start the season slow, but it's nice to win the opening game."

El Camino's defense was as stalwart as advertised.

Goalkeeper Daniel Herrera (Lawndale High) made nine saves to back a strong defensive effort from Jose Ortega, Justin Coleman (San Pedro) and John Chavez (Cal State Dominguez Hills transfer).

El Camino's home opener will be Tuesday against College of the Desert at 4 p.m.

Harbor 0, L.A. Mission 0: Host Harbor settled for a frustrating tie as its offense could not back up a stellar defensive performance. Harbor goalkeeper Gregg Williams faced just one shot, but saved a one-on-one opportunity in the first half to maintain the scoreless draw. Harbor had nine shots on goal, including close-range shots by Paul Akumba and Alfonso Fombona.
