ANDERSON – A local postal worker was arrested for allegedly stealing a gift card out of the mail.

Ashley Nicole Waldrep, 31, of Anderson, was arrested on Dec. 11 on charges of a Level 6 felony official misconduct and a Class A misdemeanor theft.

A woman from Dillwyn, Va., sent her daughter a $50 gift card to Kohl’s department store on Aug. 3. The woman followed up with Kohls customer service when her daughter, who resides in Cambridge City, hadn’t received the card by her birthday on Aug. 15, according to a probable cause affidavit.

After providing customer service with the gift card number, she was told the gift card had been fully used at store No. 108 on South Scatterfield Road in Anderson.

The gift card was used on a purchase for $151.83. The remaining balance was paid by a debit card owned by Waldrep, according to the affidavit.

When confronted by special agents with the United States Postal Service with photos of her at Kohls, Waldrep admitted it was her in the photos. She denied stealing the gift card by saying she saw it in her wallet and didn’t know how it got there.

Waldrep had been a postal support employee mail processing clerk at the processing and distribution facility in Muncie since January, according to the affidavit.

Waldrep’s initial hearing is set for 9 a.m. on Jan. 19, 2016.
