Herschel Brown dies at age of 87
Herschel R. Brown, a former Onslow County commissioner, member of the Onslow County Board of Education and contractor, died Saturday evening after a short illness. He was 87.
Brown, originally of Wilmington, had lived in Onslow County since 1952 and was very active in the political community and local causes.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
JACKSONVILLE
Attempted murder suspect surrenders
A man wanted for attempted first-degree murder has turned himself in, police said.
Courtney Alexander Metoyer, 21, of Hines Road, who police say is a member of the Bloods street gang, was charged for a Sept. 1 stabbing in the Sandy Run Apartment complex.
Metoyer turned himself in to police Saturday morning, said Capt. Tim Malfitano with the Jacksonville Police Department.
Bond was set at $50,000.
BEAUFORT
Voter registration drive scheduled
The Carteret County Board of Elections is partnering with the Beaufort Woman's Club to co-sponsor a voter registration drive.
The event will be held at the Carteret County Public Library in Beaufort from Monday through Friday. Members of the Beaufort Woman's Club will be on hand to assist citizens from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day.
The event is being held in conjunction with "Citizens Voter Registration Awareness Month" in North Carolina.
The goal is to register new voters and also ensure information for registered voters is current.

BEAUFORT
Swim advisory lifted in Carteret
A swim advisory has been lifted in Carteret County.
High bacteria levels had led the state to post a swim advisory at the Radio Island public beach access in Beaufort on Tuesday.
Tested at the site on Wednesday indicated bacteria levels had decreased to below state and federal standards, allowing the advisory to be lifted.
ONSLOW COUNTY
Take a bike ride from city to sea
The "City to the Sea" bike ride is set for today.
Registration for the leisure bike ride will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Food Lion on the corner of Piney Green and Halltown Road.
The ride will finish at Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro.
An adult must accompany riders under the age of 18 years, and all riders are encouraged to wear a helmet during the ride.
This event is sponsored by the Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department, The Bicycle Shop, Food Lion, Pizza Hut and Hammocks Beach State Park.
