David Thorpe's Analysis
February 04, 2008

One of Joakim Noah's best talents is his interior passing ability, but that strength is mostly wasted on this Bulls team. He has consistently made sharp passes to Ben Wallace -- ones that would lead to dunks, and 1's or other easy finishes for most NBA centers -- but they only amount to an occasional Big Ben dunk or, typically, a missed shot.

Last year at Florida, Noah finished a lot of shots with his left hand while he was privately dealing with a torn rotator cuff on his right shoulder. This year, not so much. He has recently begun using his left more, but he hasn't shown the same touch.

Much has been made of Noah's "tirade" in the Bulls' locker room in Orlando. Say what you want about what he says off the court, his actions on the court speak to his value to a team. Along with Horford, he's the best "in traffic" rebounder in this rookie class, using his great hands and long arms to reach over opponents and snatch the ball.

What makes Noah so rare as a player also hurt him in his tirade with an assistant coach at practice this past week. Simply put: He does not know how to stop. On the court, battling with heart on every possession -- great. On the court (or in the locker room), arguing with passion and not letting up -- not great. In this case, take the bad with the good because the good is what champions are made of -- relentless effort.

Noah's offensive game has often been criticized. But ask Gerald Wallace, Emeka Okafor and the Charlotte Bobcats how Noah plays on offense, and I think you?ll get a surprising response. He scored 17 points in 18 minutes a week ago, posting up and overpowering Wallace on one play for a bucket; exploding and dunking over Okafor on another; and sprinting and jumping his way to transition layups and offensive tip-ins, too. He scored 11 points and had four assists in the fourth quarter alone. The Bulls are better when he gets offensive touches. And he still leads all rookies in PER.

Noah was a victim of the strange rotation game former coach Scott Skiles was playing. He and Aaron Gray both deserve more playing time. It will be interesting to see what the new coach will do with his two rookies.

Was pulled in favor of Tyrus Thomas after picking up two quick fouls just after he checked in for the first time against the Sonics -- so goes Skiles' rotation. But he managed to score nine and 10 points in less than 17 and 14 minutes, respectively, in the Bulls' following two games. Leads rookies in PER.

Noah struggles to score as a post-up player, often looking a bit paralyzed and forcing up right-handed "throws." But with the ball in space, he is quick and agile and knows how to maneuver to get scoring angles.

As president of the Joakim Noah fan club, it's my duty to point out that he has been able to defend small forwards rather well, albeit in just a handful of possessions. But I think coach Scott Skiles is starting to trust him on both ends of the floor, perhaps more on defense because of the versatility he brings.

Noah is known for his energy and spirit, but do not forget that he was a dominant scoring force in big games for the Gators in his sophomore year. One of his best attributes is his great hands, which don't come into play only as a receiver or a rebounder. He is the rare big man who can pick a guard clean off the dribble drive, literally taking the ball away with two hands.
