Animo was given the wind, so the Aztec Eagles flew off with two first-half goals, which held up during the team's 2-0 victory over host Victor Valley in the CIF Southern Section Division V boys soccer quarterfinal on Friday afternoon.

Animo (15-8) will host Baldwin Park in the semifinals on Tuesday at a location to be determined.

Animo coach Sergio Medrano said 25-mph winds made the conditions difficult, but when Victor Valley opted to play against the wind in the first half, Animo took advantage. Andre Cervantes scored off a pass from Juan Arellano in the 12th minute, and Jaime Villareal added a goal in the 24th minute.

"They gave us the wind in the first half, which we wanted," Medrano said. "It was our game plan to jump out ahead and in the second half try to defend, and we were able to stop them."

Francisco Espinoza and Francisco Ortega sparked Animo's defensive effort in front of goalkeeper Alex Camacho, who made five saves to record the shutout.
