Sure thing. :)

And yes, I am sure you're right that this is a mass mailout to all concerned.

Oh, it is. Nice to know FetLife's still spending person-hours on this. Too bad Susan Wright doesn't seem interested in having these kinds of conversations publicly. :) There's a FetLife Tech Support thread about it, now, too:

Here's a copy-and-paste, text-only version of that thread:

"maybemaimed" - wtf?

by MissNightmare about 2 hours ago

I just received an email saying all my stuff is out on the web.

How has this happened?

I never used any -and I mean REALLY NEVER - addon or anything else than regular fetlife web browsing on google chrome and firefox.

I am baffled and worried and I really need to get it off the web.

"Your stuff" is pretty vague as is "on the web." Do you know what and where?

Unfortunately, just about anything you put online is subject to being copied and posted elsewhere by someone else. FetLife makes it difficult to copy pictures but it's not impossible.

And once something is out on the web, you've lost all control of it. You might contact the website owner but that doesn't mean it hasn't ended up elsewhere.

Seems like this is another case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing…. ;)

I've also already gotten several other emails in the course of the past hour. :) Here's one such thread:

Hi [REDACTED],

You are incorrect. In fact, it was you or someone who had access to your FetLife username and password and was claiming to be you, who exported your FetLife content on January 28, 2012.

If you are indeed the owner of the FetLife account using the nickname "whoeverwhatever", then you are able to remove this content from the server at fetlife.maybemaimed.com at any time, and you always were. The video at the export page explains how to do this.

If you would like your content removed, simply re-run the export and select the "Don't save a copy of my export after I download it" checkbox after the export completes.

If you run into an error, please do let me know.

As a general rule, I am not in the habit of doing things for other people that they can do themselves. Moreover, I am not in the habit of deleting files simply because someone claims to be their creator in some random piece of email. ;)

And here's another:

Hi Maymay,

I actually *did* click on the "do not export" box, and as I've said, I've never gotten anything but an error 500 screen post-export-run, so I've never had the option of downloading the archive nor of deleting it after doing so.

Since there are several iterations available of my account contents on the server, would a "successful export with screen to download and delete off server" remove all the previous exports?

Hm. That simply doesn't appear to be true:

    http://fetlife.maybemaimed.com/robots.txt

If you had clicked the "Ask search engines not to index…" box, a line in the above page excluding your export would have been the very first thing that was added, even before the export was actually begun. The fact that there are multiple exports of your account and no robots.txt exclusions shows that you never, not once, chose the "Ask search engines not to index…" option.

If you have any tips on how to work around the problems as I've stated then please point the way. I only requested that you do so because I did NOT see a way to do it myself.

Thanks,

[REDACTED]

(and I'm happy to try and work out a proof of whatever to show I am indeed the owner of the account.)

No need. I've gone ahead and verified that this email address ([REDACTED]) is indeed the owner of the [REDACTED] account on FetLife, according to that FetLife account's claims.[0]

As per your request, the export of your FetLife Export have been deleted.

This also means you'll need to re-export any content you want to back up. And if you *do* want a back up of your account, let me know and I'll happily help you work through any of the errors you seem to be getting. (For which, I hasten to add, I do sincerely apologize. The "500" errors you described are all most likely related to server load. Like it says on the page, this tool is resource intensive and, as you can imagine, I simply don't have a lot of money to throw at this thing, so errors like that sometimes happen. That's why donations really matter to me.)

All this having been said, I hope you'll take this opportunity to advocate for better privacy controls from the FetLife team. Many of your FetLife users still do not seem to realize that the content they create on FetLife are functionally publicly visible. This is not their (or your) fault; it is FetLife's. Take a look at some of the new Greeters's messages and how they blatantly and deliberately mislead new users into believing they are somehow a very "private" website:

    http://freze.it/1sz

As I've said many times before, that's just exploitative.

Anyway, Following are some links that you can read, re-read, or share with others, preferably by posting them on FetLife. ;)

The above Google Search shows an exported FetLife Conversation in which the account "[REDACTED]" claims to own the email address "[REDACTED]", which is evidence enough for me. Thanks for understanding my wish to verify this before I do something I can't "undo". :)

Hi,

If you're the owner of the FetLife account using the nickname "[REDACTED]", then you're able to remove this content from the server at fetlife.maybemaimed.com at any time, and you always were. You were also able to export it and specifically request that search engines like Google *NOT* index your content, which you seem to have chosen not to do. The video at the export page explains how to do this.

If you'd like your content removed, simply re-run the export and select the "Don't save a copy of my export after I download it" checkbox after the export completes.

If you run into an error, please do let me know.

As a general rule, I'm not in the habit of doing things for other people that they can do themselves. Moreover, I'm not in the habit of deleting files simply because someone claims to be their creator in a piece of email.

Moreover, and rather bluntly, such panic is not very realistic. As it currently exists, there is nothing that functionally prevents someone you don't want viewing your FetLife content from viewing the overwhelming majority of content your create on FetLife, regardless of where that content is stored. The fact that you are this panicked means that you might do well not to use FetLife at all, or else you might consider lobbying them for improved privacy controls.

Hi [REDACTED],

I don’t know if you’re aware that when you used Maymay’s FetLife Exporter, you allowed Google to index and post directly on the Internet everything on FetLife that you’ve loved, or commented on, or posted. Did you mean to do this? Even if you don’t mind being that out, we don’t allow anyone to take content off FetLife and post it publicly because that outs other people – especially all of the photographs. That’s a serious offense on FetLife.

If you Google your own screenname along with maybemaimed, you’ll see all of your content is publicly available. In each URL, you can see your name followed by the time stamp that Maymay’s FetLife Exporter puts on the content. Because of these kinds of programs, Maymay is permanently banned from FetLife.

We are getting multiple complaints from people who have been outed in this way and it’s causing serious problems in their lives. Can you please ask Maymay to remove your FetLife content from his website?

Aha. :)

Consider it done.

Also, would you be willing to forward me a copy of the email Susan Wright sent to you? If she emailed you, then I'm willing to put money down she emailed everyone else whose FetLife material was exported, too, and I'd like to know what's being said.

Thanks!

Thanks maymay,

Ha! I realise now why I never figured out where the export went when I ran it previously.

I got an error then, and again now (with both Chrome and on Firefox), so I assumed it didn't work (and didn't really care, so I never followed it up):

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@fetlife.maybemaimed.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

You can remove this yourself, and always could, at any time. Just run the exporter again and you'll be offered the option to remove your archives from my server. The video explains this, too. Let me know if you run into any errors, but barring an error, I don't make a habit of doing things for people they can do themselves. :)

Hi maymay,

Can you please remove my exported FL content at http://fetlife.maybemaimed.com/[REDACTED]-2013-02-09.

I don't actually care about my content, I just used the tool becaue I was curious to see how it worked and what came out. I can't remember quite what happened, but after the export I had no idea WHERE the content could be found, or what it contained, so I just forgot about it.

I've now found it and see that it has downloaded a lot of content that is not actually mine, including other's comments and pictures that I loved or commented on (including some face pictures of friends). I'm not comfortable with their information being 'out there on the internet' (and I know FL 'security' is a fallacy and anyone can download anything they want, but I don't want to be the person who has put it out there without their permission).

For clarity, and just to let you know (though I am sure you are aware already), I got an email from Susan Wright c/ the FL caretakers asking me to have the content removed and that's why I went looking for it today. I'm actually *not* asking for it to be removed because of them (the fact that they sent me an email about it makes me want to leave it up there because 'fuck them'), but since I'm not personally comfortable with it, I would like it removed all the same.

Thanks in advance,
