Ex-postal worker admits defrauding workers'
comp out of $392,000
"A former U.S. postal worker admitted in federal court
this morning that he defrauded the federal government out of
$392,000 in workers' compensation payments over the past 16
years. David P. VanDeusen, 56, pleaded
guilty to fraud in obtaining workers' comp benefits. VanDeusen
went out on workers' comp in 1991 with a back injury he says he
suffered on the loading dock at the U.S. Postal Service's
distribution center on Taft Road. VanDeusen admitted he and his
wife own Double D Auto Sales in Tully and that he's been buying
and selling cars at local auctions since 1991. He also was
getting income from two other businesses -- a sign-making outfit
and a driveway-sealing business. VanDeusen faces up to five years in
prison and a $250,000 fine when he's sentenced Dec. 13." -

FSS (DPS
Flats) Will Change Delivery Environment
Among the items in the Proposed National Agreement between the
NALC and USPS is a memorandum on FSS work methods. FSS could add
another (third) bundle to carriers' daily workload (1. carrier-cased
letters and flats; 2. DPS letters; 3. DPS flats). According to
the memorandum, a Joint Task Force comprised of four members
from the NALC and four from the USPS will "explore alternative
work methods necessary for handling mail in an FSS environment."
Though the implementation of FSS will result in greater
efficiencies in the sorting of mail, the implementation could make
the daily work of carriers harder in that carriers will probably
have a third bundle everyday, instead of just on circular (ADVO,
etc.) days. (Still not clear is how circulars will be delivered
in an FSS environment.) Also, carrier routes will be adjusted
longer as carriers will need less office time to sort mail. -

NALC Postal Record: Who
Should Be US President?
(PDF)
"To help assess the presidential contenders, the NALC Legislative
and Political Department in late May sent a questionnaire to all
declared Republican and Democratic candidates -- at the time, 10
Republicans and seven Democrats. The questionnaire noted that
candidates' responses to the questions "will weigh substantially
in considering NALC support."

Seattle: Local post offices hit by new breed of
identity theft
"In mid-July, three men left their homes near Los
Angeles and traveled to Seattle to buy postage stamps. But these
were no ordinary collectors. Armed with at least 27 stolen
credit-card numbers, federal prosecutors say, Artem Danilov,
Stephan Melkonyan and Karapet Kankanian fraudulently purchased
more than 3,200 books of stamps worth nearly $24,000 from
Seattle-area post offices in just more than a week. A federal
grand jury Thursday charged the men with an assortment of
crimes. Following a pattern that Postal Service investigators
have uncovered in at least five Western states,
the men made
mass purchases of stamps after normal working hours from
automated postal machines, which are accessible 24 hours a day
in the lobbies of many post offices around the country,
prosecutors allege." -
