Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds unite to hail cup-winning heroes
"THIS is not just about football, this is more important than that. This has brought great happiness to a whole country. This is not about a team, this is about human beings."
So said Jorvan Vieira, Iraq's national football team coach, yesterday after his side achieved one of sport's great fairytale moments, beating the favourites Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the Asian Cup final in Jakarta to provide a rare moment for celebration in their war-torn homeland.
In the 71st minute of the match, Iraqi captain Younis Mahmoud, a Sunni, climbed to head a perfectly-weighted corner from Hawar Mulla Mohammed, a Kurd, into the net.
"Those heroes have shown the real Iraq. They have done something useful for the people as opposed to the politicians and lawmakers who are stealing or killing each other," said Sabah Shaiyal, 43, a policeman in Baghdad's Shiite district of Sadr City.
"Once again, our national team has shown that there is only one, united Iraq."
But after the game, Mahmoud, who was named player of the tournament, said one of the tragedies of the war was that the team would not even be able to return to Iraq with the trophy.
"I don't want the Iraqi people to be angry with me," he said. "[But] if I go back with the team, anybody could kill me or try to hurt me."
The Iraqi captain, who like the rest of the team wore black armbands to remember the dozens killed by car-bombers following the side's semi-final victory over South Korea on Wednesday, said the United States presence in his homeland was a "problem".
"I want America to go out," he said. "Today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but out. I wish the American people didn't invade Iraq and hopefully it will be over soon."
Yesterday, the Iraqi government enforced a vehicle ban to try to prevent a repeat of the two car bombs that tore into people celebrating Iraq's semi-final win. Mahmoud said one of the victims had been a small child.
"His mother said when her child was killed in front of her, she didn't cry. She said, 'I present my son as a sacrifice for the national team'. Then we had to win," he said.
An Iraqi military official said police had foiled a suicide car bomb attack in Baghdad yesterday, but the celebrations brought death for some. Shots fired into the air killed at least four people and wounded 17 when they returned to earth.
But for the most part, Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds and other Iraqis joined together in peaceful celebration of their similarly mixed football team. "This winning has united the Iraqis and nobody has been this excited since a long time," said Yassir Mohammed, a Sunni from Baghdad.
Traffic jams clogged the streets in the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah. Amir Mohammed, a Shiite, joined a Kurdish friend to celebrate. "The soccer team has shown that we are united from the south to the north," he said.
The Iraqi team, known as the "Lions of the Two Rivers" were making their first appearance in the final against three-time champions Saudi Arabia.
In the post-match news conference, Vieira, a Brazilian, and Mahmoud sat wearing black armbands. "It's very clear, from our arms, our respect to the people who died when we put Korea out of the competition," Vieira said. "This victory we offer to the families of those people."
He also paid tribute to the team physio, Anwar, who died in a bombing as he was collecting tickets to attend the pre-tournament training camp in Jordan.
Vieira confirmed he was now quitting and said: "I have worked my best to give happiness to the Iraqi people, to bring a warm smile to their lips, and my mission is accomplished."

""shots fired into the air killed at least four people and wounded 17 when they returned to earth""
have they not learned all these years with many killed from firing in the air, that what goes up, must come down??.......i thought the Iraqi people were smarter than that!!!

You are just a miserable old sod.
So torn with venom and hatred that you cannot see the implication of this.
Why can't you see the hope that this united team brings to this worn torn occupied county. Sunni, Shiite and Kurds played together for their country and won! They won for this tortured population and every Iraqi who has been forced out of their home.
If this could be transfered onto the streets of of Iraq the American people wouldn't need to cry for the return of their sons and daughters they would be leaving Iraq quicker that they ran from Saigon!

Report as unsuitableWell thanks god that’s over now all we have to do is get bin Laden and George into a football game and we can all get back to business. I’m impressed Leon, you really do come up with some great ideas.
number 3
The great idea is for Iraqis and and Palestinians to stop fighting each other, unite in a common cause and kick the arses of the occupying armies out of their countries.
Report as unsuitable#4
Report as unsuitableMy guess would the "occupying armies" will leave when they tire of breaking things and it will have little to do with Iraqis and Palestinians kicking their "arses".
Read what a newspaper has to say about this victory and what is happening every day as a direct result of American imperialism.

So does this mean that you believe what newspapers write or just those articles that support your worldview?
I would never have allowed an American Soldier to set foot in Iraq. I am also of the opinion that when we leave Iraq there is a very good chance that what occurs will make the “occupation” look tame by comparison. So when we’re gone and you get your wish…
Report as unsuitableHappy for the Iraqi players and people and they actually deserved their victory - well done.
Report as unsuitableGood for the Iraqis. Iraq the Model was liveblogging the game, his reaction when they won was pretty touching. I don't much get into soccer, but if it makes people happy...
And a quick check of the usual news sites indicates no one has been car-bombed while out celebrating. Hope they enjoy the respite.

Report as unsuitableDespite having taken a blow to the head, the Iraqi captain had enough sense to wish that the Americans would leave Iraq so that the people could slaughter each other in peace. Report as unsuitableSandy, Dolivaw & Oder - you have really dredged the bottom today; your "contributions" are truly despicable.
I watched some of this match on television, and it would have brought tears to your eyes to see the genuine joy in people's faces after all the bloodshed and sorrow.
Anybody with the least shred of decency, sympathy or human feeling would have to be moved that in spite of everything these people are trying to get all the folk together, trying to give people a cause for celebration, a reason to believe that there is hope and a future.
But you lot are so eaten up with your hatred and bile that you actually cannot stand to see people getting on together.
I suppose you're more to be pitied than anything else - it can't be easy living with such a weight of hatred. But you could at least stop spreading your vileness and polluting these forums with it.

Of course these Iraqi soccer players want the U.S. out of Iraq. They were brought up in the "system". They were protected from Saddam because they had special talent. They want that life back. The reason they could be "killed" is because to some people in Iraq, they represent a murderous dictator, rape rooms, gassing, etc.
Report as unsuitable"I wish the American people didn't invade Iraq and hopefully it will be over soon."
I guess he preferred playing under Uday?
Report as unsuitablehey leon get your head out of the rice bowl and back to reality! So Iraq has had thier day, they deserve it. They are over and winning this game because WE are liberating them and gues what if they would have lost Saddam would have been happy to kill them as he as in the past yes its a fact don't argue it. It is probably easy for Leon to sit on sidelines with NOTHING at stake to run his jaws but it serves no purpose other than to populate a blog. The name Leon doesn't come to mind when I think of Hong Kong anyhow could it be he is without a country? Well at the end of the day F%^K Leon you sorry A## soy sauce eatin bit^h why don't you either put yourself at risk or have something at stake before you open your little yellow co^k sucker. Fa&&o%%!

Report as unsuitableLeon has taken one too many headers. He is and athlete, a coward, and an idiot. Our troops, the ones that brought free elections to his country and got rid of Saddam, are still there protecting his countrymen and families, while he cowers and yells "get out" from under his rock. This Iraqi coward is why Saddam and his killers were able to control the country. Have a nice life you ignorant jerk.
Report as unsuitableTo my regret, we (the U.S.) saved your asses from the Japs in WWII. Conversely, you should give thanks to the Japs, your former imperial rulers, who set up the education system which remains in place to this day.
Report as unsuitableWhat keeps the residents of Hong Kong from uniting against Bejing? I suppose it's one of two things, either you're morality is on parr with the evils of communism or your just cowards; I think it's probably both.

Report as unsuitableHeres some free advice, "don't kick a gift horse in the mouth"
You wouldn't be playing your pathetic game if our troops weren't there in the first place.
Be careful what you ask for.
Maybe Iraq's soccer captain would like to go back to the days of Uday's torture for the players whenever they lost. Did I hear I a thank you?
Report as unsuitableSo the soccer hero would like the US to leave Iraq? Well, I have a bit of news for the soccer hero: we'd love to leave Iraq as soon as possible. There isn't anyone in the US, George Bush included, who doesn't want to get our troops out of Iraq as soon as it is feasible. But I have just one question for the soccer hero: If the US pulls out of Iraq tomorrow and Iraq turns into a ethnic-cleansing bloodbath, will the soccer hero then blame the US for pulling out too soon?
Report as unsuitableWhat many of you Commies fail to realize, and what the real story here is that this Soccer team, under the leadership of Uday Hussein (who was President of the Soccer Federation), never achieved winning this tournamnet. In fact, when players had a bad showing, they were bound, tied, and had their feet whipped, or they were simply hung from the goalposts...Yesterday's result is exactly what those on the left (and the terrorists) do not want-unity....Congrats to the team...They played and excellent tournament...Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for the terrorists that are supported by Iran and Al Queda.
Report as unsuitableThis young man has to make his own decisions. Thankfully someone has seen to it that he has that right and ability. It is ashame he does not appreciate what his liberty has cost and what it is worth.
Maybe he'd rather have been training under Uday?

Report as unsuitableSuch a shame. "American Imperialists". We spend our young lives and our treasure to bring freedom from tyranny to others, asking nothing in return, except for others to live free and prosper. It's called "liberation". I guess by the standards of those who make claims of "American Imperialism", France is part of the American Empire. Many French died in the wars America helped fight to free them from tyranny. I guess America is to blame for those deaths, not the Nazis? I guess more of them would be alive if the American Empire had butted out and let Hitler prevail? Perhaps they too could win a soccer tournament with a swastika on their uniform? I just wish those around the world were more interested in cold-blooded killers, blowing up women and children would run "with their tails firmly between their legs", rather than the Americans who liberated them and are risking their lives to defend them. We do not want Iraq as our 51st state. We want Iraq to be a country where people are safe to follow dreams of education, propsperity, and happiness, rather than dreams of killing innocent cilvilian women and children in service to their god or dictator.
Report as unsuitableAs a soldier in the United States Army, I am proud of what the iraqi team accomplished.
Is it right that they should have to be worried for their lives when they get home? Absolutely not.
Is it the fault of the United States that the situation requires them to feel that way? Absolutely not.
For you sad leftist chumps who cannot remember much, try reading about what it was like for that same team a few years ago under you best buddy Saddam and his kids.
If you can read, do it:
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/04/22/1050777259760.html
Iraqi people may be suffering, but it is not because of Americans. When is the last time a US serviceman set up a roadside bomb and killed women and children in a market? When did they last open fire outside a stadium killing dozens?
Never happened you say? Shut you trap then.
Oh, and by the way, though things are not perfect in Iraq right now, they are getting better. The majority of Iraqi people say that it is better now than it was under Saddam (www.timesonline.co.uk).
They have something that Europeans and even some Americans have sadly lost. Hope and optimism.
Report as unsuitableHow on earth did whoever selected the team manage it?
I see it as comparable to a selector, 20 years ago, choosing a winning team from Celtic and Rangers to play on July 12.
Whoever the selector was, I suggest he is put forward as President of Iraq.
Their country, their destiny. They maun dree their ain wyrd. I wish them well.
Report as unsuitableThis is truly a great event and shows the potential of Iraq if they wish to work together. The capitan may be too young to remember the torture the son of Saddam put athletes through when they lost. If the USA had not removed him, Saddam most likely would still be in power and it is uncertain if the team would have won or participated at all. It is easy to chide the USA for taking action. However, to say Saddam should still be in power or that the USA should leave will Iraq is in such disorder is a stretch.
Report as unsuitableThe problem is not AMERICAN "imperialism"; the problem is EUROPEAN, and in this case more specifically BRITISH, and it goes back a long ways. These countries in the Middle East, like in Africa, were divided up into countries by politicians in Europe who cared nothing about tribal rivalries that date back centuries. Nations like Iraq simply cannot exist without the iron fist of ruthless murders like Saddam Hussein. Iraq should be split into at least three sections. The model should be "Iraq as a country has failed. Split it up and start again." People always ignore what it was like BEFORE we got there. Either we stand by and let these dictators continue generation after generation of ethnic cleansing and mass murder, or we do something about it.
Report as unsuitable#33 the US saved Hong Kongs ass in WWII??!!
erm, it was part of the British Empire and was defended by British and Candian troops. Overwhelmed by Japanese forces the day after Pearl Harbour, the British finally took it back in August of 1945.
there is enough anti-Americanism and gung-ho crap on this thread without history being rewritten.
Report as unsuitableThe only reason the lefties condem the USA is because they have no experience with the nature of conflict. Anyone who has seen the horror of pre-invasion Iraq would not have the stones to make some of the comments I read here. Stay hidden behind your keyboards, we "Yanks" will come to help you too if you need it.... oh, that's right, we already did. Thank you to those "across the pond" who still understand and support our efforts.
Congratulations to the Iraqi team for their hard fought victory. We wish you well and hope to leave you to your own successes as soon as possible.
Report as unsuitableThe soccer captain is afraid and I can not blame him; yet, his fears step on the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the armed forces of the United States and other countries fighting terrorism. We are not blowing up civilians to promote sectarian violence. Instead of calling on us to leave he should be thanking us.
Report as unsuitableWow. Iraq won the Asian Cup. Who even heard of the Asian Cup??? Such MSM sensationalism! Asian Cup, what a hoot! Does the losing team get beheaded?
Report as unsuitableIraqi football captain asks America to leave? He's had too many shots to the head, I'd say. Are the Yanks who he is afraid will kill him? It is ignorant and insensitive comments like this that are so dispiriting to those giving their lives so that the Iraqi captain can speak his mind, instead of being abused by Qusai Hussein if they lost a match.
Report as unsuitableUS Imperialists? The US (and its Allies) liberated France, Germany, Italy, China, Japan and many others. Does the US Govern these countries today or are they free to be miserable?
Would you choose to be under the Rape and torture rooms of Uday and Sadam or the temporary eye of the US and our Allies?
If the Iraqi's really want us out fast, quit killing the innocents in the streets. As soon as the police/millitary of Iraq can stop the killing on their own, we are out of there!
My friend from Hong Kong. Are you a Buddhist? If so, you cannot pray in Saudi Arabia and other "moderate" Middle East states. Do you want your daughter to go to school? If so, you cannot do this in "moderate" Middle East states.
Report as unsuitable#40, above, is a brave soldier putting himself on the line for others' freedom. Just as we did in 1944 for you leftist Europeans. Sorry we did.
If the captain of the Iraqi team had lost - or had even performed badly during a practice game - perhaps one of Saddam's insane boys would have had him and his family tortured or beheaded. And not "underpants on the head" tortured, REAL torture. It's amazing to Americans to see the ignorance, blindness and hatred of the Left in Europe. Gordon Brown can talk all he wants about the "special relationship" but to come here and read the nonsense on this board made this American sick.
Report as unsuitableCan you say "DROP THE NUKE"? Better yet give them the nuke and it would not suprise me if they used it on themselves. Maybe launch it straight up into the air or something. I wish we would pull out and let them have there little hell hole. There is no help for the s*** of the earth and this finally proves it!
Report as unsuitableAll, Its great they won. But they miss the point, they would all be dead if Saddam were still there. The US Leave? Well after readign the headlines a few minutes ago that the Iraq Parliment decided to take a recess until after Sept 4, without passing any laws or doing anything they were supposed to do?
I vote Great Britian and America leave now and let them all kill each other. 6 months if even that after we leave, they will all be complaining and want us back. Let them have the god forsaken country.
Report as unsuitableSeems that somewhere along the line, these young men have forgotten their "roots". With Saddam, I recall that losers did not fare very well in his regime. So, let's leave tomorrow, and let these soccer players, the U.N., et al, deal with these that are so grateful to the memories of Saddam.
Report as unsuitable#20 Above. You are an idiot. The answer is Yes and yes.
Was Iraq a threat before? YES, they were harboring Al Quida which attacked the USA.
Are they a threat now, YES if we leave the same will happen until they can govern their own country? Seen them do it lately? NO They went on vacation until Sept 4 while the "occupying forces" patrol their streets and proect their citizens.
What paper and news programs are some of you watching? They even killed several peopl by gunfire Celebrating the victory. Amazing, how so many people of intellignce can write in here and be so damn stupid.
Report as unsuitableBefore the USA finished the Kuwiat War, started by Iraq (for leftists, anti-Americans, ungrateful Iraqis, - invaded Iraq), when Iraqis fire their guns up into the air, the bullets must have gotten stuck up Allah's a--. Now, it's USA's fault they come down and kill Iraqis. If US did not go there, Uday probably would have had Younis Mahmoud runthrough wood chipper by now and he wouldn't have to drivel about US.

Report as unsuitableSome americans are ok, but a large proportion of you support terrorism. I advocate a hardline against such people.
Report as unsuitableI personally think we should get out of Iraq. I supported the military and was appalled at how the aftermath was handled.
That being said, you ignoramuses out there who think were are colonialists or imperialists or whatever, you need to re-think your view. We are Americans are proud and love OUR country. We have no desire to occupy some sh*t hole country of ingrates.
We did what we had to do. If Iraq could get its act together, we could come home. They have failed miserably. I say we leave now and if Al Qaeda or ANY threat re-constitutes itself, we should come back with guns blazing.
Not one more cent should be spent, not one more life sacrificed for the sake of any other country that does not reciprocrate its loyalty as a friend. May God help you when Islamists come after your country. You friggin weak wankers.
Report as unsuitableThe captain Mhmou is a good football player but otherwise foolish. He is a Kurd in iraq; long hated by the sunnis and shiites. Worse, the kurds and turks are centuries sworn enemies, who have amassed 100,000 troops on the border with no. iraq. Waiting for USA to leave? Sure looks like it. As soon as the americans leave, turks will no doubt invade no. iraq and annihilate the kurds "once and for all". No doubt syria and iran will back up their respective islamic tribes and fight each other to the death as well.
There is no and has been no iraqi unity... ever. The closest they came was with saddam, who executed 100,000's to enforce "unity", and he was particularly hard on the kurds. I find Mahmous remarks naive at best, and even worse, inviting self destruction for himself and the entire region. Perhaps this is what they want; perhaps this is what they deserve.
There is no reason for USA to continue to fight in iraq or invade iran or whatever. I wonder why they are still there. Strategically, this is a losing cause. The best thing for them to do is to pull back into the western desert in semi=active fire bases, wait for the inevitable islamic self-destruction, and then move back in to fill the vacuum.
Report as unsuitable'I say we leave now and if Al Qaeda or ANY threat re-constitutes itself, we should come back with guns blazing.

If you aren't already here in the U.S., chances are you want to come here for our freedom. Your comments are a waste. Are you a BBC or Time reporter with an Anti American agenda ?
Go away already, nobody believes your bullsh*t.
Report as unsuitablerichard, you are correct, he is a sunni. I had read an earlier article saying he is a kurd. It is irrelevant though, as soon as the USA leaves this region will self destruct.
USA can win easily by withdrawing to the desert and waiting for the Muslims to kill each other off.
Report as unsuitableOK guys - all of us that have provided for the welfare, protection, and huge monetary influx of tax dollars to a country primarily full of thankless nomads who are more interested in stealing and killing each other, should stand up and yell “Embrace the SUCK!!!” as we board the aircraft and salute goodbye!
Report as unsuitableForget them – let the camel-copulating barbarians fend for themselves. We’ll have the UN pay them a visit in a year or two to provide relief services to pick up the bodies of Kurds and Sunnis after the religious “cleansing” that will take place. Tell al-Maliki that he can handle his country on his own and deal with his disloyal Muslim brothers.
72 virgins in paradise, anyone??
Pathetic ingrate!!! I never was for pulling out our troops... UNTIL NOW! Let's pull out and send this so-called "soccer star" back to his stupid little country. The US doesn't deserve this kind of talk after all we've sacrificed, both in troops and money. UNBELIEVABLE!
Report as unsuitableTO: Leon and #44. dundee8cologne1
Leon, you've got a lot of learning to do my friend as does this Iraqi soccer captain. US saved your a$$ Leon and is one of the reasons you aren't speaking Japanese right now. Have a little respect alot of people died for you to be even saying things on this board.
#44
You've got it wrong. Americans were very involved in saving China's a$$ from the Japanese. Just do a little research on the AVG (American Volunteer Group) and the 23rd Fighter Group Flying Tigers as one example of this. If it wasn't for them training the Chinese Air Force and pushing back the Japenese Air Forces China would have continued losing the rest of its cities like it did Hong Kong, Beijing, etc.
As for this news item, it really bothers me when the leftists and now Iraqi soccer players spew out this anti-american bull$shit. Regardless, we'll keep on fighting...and dieing, so he is able to speak his mind and win soccer matches. Hopefully, one day Mahmoud and even Leon will realize the sacrifice and be grateful.
Report as unsuitableThe Iraqis will never thank the USA. We, as a nation, have to accept the liberation and democratization of Iraq as a thankless task. What we fail to understand is the people have too much pride & machismo. Essentially, the US and the UK took over Iraq in less than a month. I'm sure in secret that the people are glad Saddam was dethroned and are hopeful for democracy but their pride is still hurt that they're country was occupied so easily and quckly. Therefore, they have to spin the eventual US withdrawl as a victory on their part in order to show strength in the Miiddle East.
Plus, collectively they aren't blessed with an inordinate ammount of common sense-- shooting AK-47s into the air in a war zone to celebrate a sports victory? And people dying as a result of it? If it wasn't so tragic, it would be hilarious.
Report as unsuitableAny country can descend into civil war given the right circumstances-right yanks?
The Iraqis will sort themselves out eventually, but first they have to get rid of the yank terrorists who are just making things worse.
Report as unsuitableWe obliterated the Iraqi army in days and crippled ourselves for the future by not planning for the peace and future insurgency. Mistakes were made and now we are paying for it.
Had we not been arrogant and stubborn, this operation would have progressed succesfully.
We can't change history, we can only help to shape the future. To say or give credit to Bin Laden for being a tactical genius is stupid. He may have wished for a global jihad but his actions in Afghanistan led to his little club being clobbered by military airpower and Afghani warlords.
Hell, even Mullah is pissed at him for bringing the wrath of the U.S. Military to Afghanistan. He was so used to the Democrats taking punch after punch that he didn't think we'd go after him in his tent. WRONG.
We should have never trusted the Warlords to finish the job. We should have decapitated him ourselves. Keep an eye Pakistan. We'll be there soon enough to do what Musharraf is too chicken sh*t to do.
Report as unsuitableMr. seth, you have a correct analysis IMHO.
I doubt the "iraqis" who are left in iraq after the USA will have time to spin anything though. They will be fighting for their lives, as pawns to Syria and Iran.
Report as unsuitable'We should have never trusted the Warlords to finish the job. We should have decapitated him ourselves. Keep an eye Pakistan. We'll be there soon enough to do what Musharraf is too chicken sh*t to do.
'
well at least you're admitting that the US is capable of making mistakes. Of course there's good reasons why the US terrorists didn't 'do the job themselves', and why they wont be going into Pakistan.
Report as unsuitableI can't believe the ignorance of this "team leader" and the people posting prior comments on here. Has everyone forgotten how the Iraqi team were treated under Sadaam's son? So this guy, and obviously the brain dead among you think that the torture and killings of the football team under his "leadership" was a better situation. If they played poorly they were tortured! God you lot are so thick! I'm begging you..PLEASE DON"T BREED! Open your eyes and quit being sheep. Get informed and spout an educated opinion. You're not impressing anyone with your ignorance.
Report as unsuitableAmusing how this story that was meant to be an 'iraqi occupation good news story' has backfired so spectacularly! We were going to see the victorious smiling iraqis posing with monkey-boy telling him how grateful they were at him invading their country and killing thousands of their fellow country men. Till they turned round and said 'actually we'd like you to f**k off as well!'
I'm begining to wonder about the stories about the Iraq national team under Saddam. Wouldn't be suprised if they weren't just another example of the lies and propaganda we've been fed by the US from day one.
Report as unsuitableNo, the US won't be going into Pakistan, their target is Iran. The biggest oil resource in the world, outside Saudi Arabia and Iraq, is in Iran. The neocons want to control the lot... but it won't work.
Some monkey mentioned that the Iraqis were killing and stealing off each other. The biggest theft taking place in Iraq is the theft of their oil by the oil companies.
No, Bin Laden is not a tactical genius... he's a patsy who was, and probably still is, a CIA agent. When he has served his purpose the US will get shot of him, make no mistake about that my crazy American friends. He was allowed to escape for a reason for if the US was serious about capturing him, then they could get him tomorrow... if they really wished. But he's not on their wish list.
Report as unsuitableI wish I could just say Congrats on a good round of soccer, and A swell victory which was well deserved
But It must become a metaphor for a war and violence everyone wants to end.
Why can't it just be a good game of "FOOTIE" and leave it at that?
Inasmuch as most americans are stupid, rarely travel, and we just don't get how politics works. That is to say how Sports Athletes are now political yahoos who know lots of politics, and We should listen to, and inplement their strategy (Old meaning of yahoo, not a person on yahoo). Have anyone heard these guys at the end of games? Most Athelete aren't known for saying a lot of intelegent stuff post game
Can then Those who want the USA to leave not tell me how if the violence just ended and Law and order was restored that The USA would have NO excuse to remain
IF they stopped killing each other, and lived in peace, have jobs, go see the Doctor on a regular basis, and No suicide bombings then voila
THE US troops would have To leave post haste, Along with all the other military folks in the nation
So long as the excercize their right to kill each other, then they'll not give the US time to go
Report as unsuitableAgain, a comment section on an internet news site has managed to fill me with shame. It has been my experience that few in the US understand why pride is known to be a deadly sin. It is obviously demonstrated here once again. How can one create such a mess and so much suffering, and then blame the afflicted for not cleaning it up? How can one expect gratitude for turning another's home into utter bloody chaos? Unbounded pride is the only answer.
Seth says "What we fail to understand is the people have too much pride & machismo." The irony is too much for me to handle.
And by the way, in the US there are approximately 30,000 deaths and 75,000 injuries caused by gunfire every year. Do I hate America for pointing that out?
Report as unsuitableWhen its all said and done, Iraqis can thank Saddam Hussein for any additional deaths after his fall. Not the U.S.
What's happening in Iraq is just history repeating itself. The country has gotten back to the business of internal strife, sectarian violence and religious war. It's nothing new for the mideast.
Report as unsuitableThoreau - you are misinformed on falling bullets. Any object thrown from any elevation will reach the same speed by the time it returns to that elevation on the way down. In other words, the acceleration required for an object to escape gravity is equal to the force of gravity itself.
Report as unsuitableThe reason the occupation has had such a hard time is because we sparked an insurgency in 91' and left them to be slaughtered in an historical episode that made the Bay of Pigs seem like a country social.
We are paying for that betrayal by Bush 41and the UN to this day because the population is only now slowly beginning to trust us. Unfortunately their hesitation has not served them well because the ceaseless bleed/leads news stories and constant squawking from the cut-and-run crowd are weighing heavy on an American population that would like nothing more than for the problem to just disappear... which it will, for us, when a Democratic president is elected and it no longer furthers the goals of the left-leaning Bush-hating media to exaggerate tragedy and bury progress.
Turns out that our foe’s biggest weapon, as in Vietnam, are the political forces in our own country and their megaphone media that give our enemies the hope they need to continue a fight where they cannot defeat us; but one where we can lose.
I'm praying for these people because like most people they are ignorant. GWB, their only real friend, will stay in until he leaves office in early '09 because he is a strong man who cares more about doing what is right than blowing with the political winds of the day to try to chase a political legacy. But Iraq beware, because if you don't get your act together before then you've got no other friends in this country with the political will to help you through your coming crisis.
Report as unsuitableI, too, am beginning to suspect that some of the Muslim antagonism directed towards Americans might well be displaced aggression caused by embarassment. It's not just that they get spanked instantly everytime they go to war, or that they have failed miserably to take the opportunity to reform their countries into grown-up nations, or that their political leaders range from despotic secular or religious Caliph wanna-bes to the corrupt, the inept or the targeted-for assassination. The real kicker is that, incredibly, there are so many morons willing to kill themselves and countless innocents at the behest of leaders so cowardly they dress in drag in an effort to escape justice instead of standing up for what they profess to believe. Hell, I'm embarassed that they're even the same species as me.
Report as unsuitableIt's worth a thought, before we come down too hard on poor Little Richard above and (other?) Muslims similarly afflicted.

Report as unsuitableThe ignorant drivel some people are capable of spewing is beyond belief. At some point the US is just going to have to let Darwin's theory run it's course with some people and let them all kill each other.
If any place on this planet is proof that some people would prefer to just go on killing each other than live in peace it's the Middle East. The only thing the Muslims can all agree on is they all hate Israel and the US. But they're all so busy killing each other they can't accomplish anything constructive. Just look at the Palestinians. They can't kill each other fast enough. Is it any wonder why the Israelis aren't excited about a Palestinian State on their border?
When the US leaves Iraq and they get to govern themselves the world will see why Saddam was the brute that he was. He had to be to govern these people.
The US will leave Iraq. However, we would like to leave it in peace but unfortunately the Iraqi's apparently won't have it. And when the ethnic cleansing horrifies the world the same dopes that want the US out of Iraq now will blame the US for the Iraqi's killing each other.
Report as unsuitableThe world will have peace only when those who refuse to live in peace are dead.

Report as unsuitable#86 " It's nothing new for the Middle East".
It's nothing new for the people in the Middle East to suffer western interference motivated by economic greed and ignorance, carving up their countries, and deliberately dividing and ruling over them... and treating the Arabs as sub-humans. It comes second nature to the ruling elites in the west, then there's a trickle down effect which is very much on display, in a no-holds barred manner, on these forums. The UK,for instance, used chemical WMDs on the Iraqi people as far back as the 1920s when Iraq was a British Protectorate within the empire.... then of course the CIA reared up Saddam and helped to put him in power to do the west's bidding.

Sorry to be so blunt but your post is a load of b#llocks.
Just as PM Brown is no different from Blair, he of the sick grin, you can bet your gin-soaked bippy that a Democratic president will not be significantly different from the Republican incumbent.
It's not just the governments of the USA and the UK that are rotten to the core it is the whole corrupt rotting edifice that is our political and economic system. Our democracies are an absolute sham.

Your attitude is part of the problem. The USA is not the world's protector or policeman, self-appointed or otherwise, and never has been. The world owes the USA nothing. The USA has invaded 50 countries since the end of the second world war. Not exactly a force for peace. It's economic stranglehold touches every nation on the earth in which it acts, as always, for its own selfish ends regardless of the consequences. There is nothing altruistic about the actions of the USA. It threatens nation after nation setting large chunks of humanity (not just Islam) against it.
Report as unsuitableThe relationship between the USA and the rest of the world is that of the bully against the bullied. The USA feeds off the misery and despair of the world in pursuit of the glory of commerciial profit. The leaders of the USA worship at the feet of Mammon, their god is Money.
To Sandy:
I would guess at least 4 people are killed every year in fireworks accidents on the 4th of July, so complaining about Iraqi deaths during a celebration is a bit hypocritical.
Congratulations to a hard working Iraqi team. I hope the spirit of hard work and mutual success carries over to the political powers that are keeping a beneficial compromise from happening.
Report as unsuitableCongrats to the Iraqi soccer team and to the hope they brought for a brief moment of time that Iraqis can all work together and live in peace. Unfortunately for the Iraqi people I don't believe it will happen.

Nice 'christian' attitude there.
Report as unsuitableBrian,
US "economic stranglehold touches every nation on the earth" and has probably raised the standard of living by two or three times of a large portion of the planet. Our wealth is pouring OUT of our country in a huge trade deficit that benefits OTHER countries. Maybe you should look up the definition of "Imperialism."
History is a handy thing to know. The US didn't go to Europe or Asia to protect anybody during WWII. We were dragged into somebody else's war. Europe ended up with Hitler using his huge army because nobody had the will to do anything about it until it was too late. The same mistake the world is currently making with Iranian President Ahmadinejad. So you think the big bad Americans should stay home and let him nuke his neighbors. Well unfortunately he will nuke London and New York or where ever you live as soon as he figures out how to.
The guy believes he will usher in the Islamic "messiah" (the 12th Imam) by starting a war with the west. Yeah, we should be nice to this guy and let him have nukes. Can you say Vichy? Or how about a nice naive "peace for our time" ?
The world will have peace only when those who refuse to live in peace are dead.
Report as unsuitableIt is absurd to expect either Christians or Muslims to live as God intends. The one true prophet J.M. Barrie teaches that there are only three kinds of people: True Believers in Tinkerbell; those who aren't sure, but want to be one of the Lost Boys and can regain salvation by clapping; and the Evil Ones who have "grown out of it", or worse, supplanted Her with false gods. It is our Holy Duty to slay these Infidels wherever they may be found.
Report as unsuitableYes...perhaps we should go back to the enlightened days of Saddam Hussein when the entire Iraqi football team would have been tortured if they'd lost...yes, big, bad USA...perhaps this fool needs to realize that the people of the Middle East need to stop cultivating their obsessive, belligerent self-pity. Iraqis need to start working together to develop their country and put an end to their pathetic, self-destructive history of tribalism. Iraq is a war zone because of Islamo-terrorist murderers who want to keep the country in the 12th century, not the presence of the US or anyone else.
As for Brian and his anti-US skreed, maybe you've forgotten the Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift, and on and on and on. I'm pretty sure my father and my two uncles (both killed, one in Belgium, the other in Italy) would have wanted to finish school and start a peaceful life rather than having their a**es drafted and then getting sent off to fight (and die) because you folks in Europe couldn't wait 25 years before started another global war. Yes, Brian, the US learned the hard way that relying on the likes of you or anybody else only leads to more Hitlers and Saddams, and Stalins. Yes, fool, sometimes the world needs a cop...but, next time the wolf is at the door call on Ecuador, or Brazil, or Canada. Or better yet, speaking of "worshiping at the Feet of Mammon," why don't you use some of the money handed the do-nothing Royal Family to beef-up your own military. Until then, just shut up.

I didn't claim it was the mission of the church. It's just an unfortunate truth. Christianity has nothing to do with it.
Report as unsuitableSaddam was a terrorist who used chemical weapons on his own people. He was a menace to the region and kept lying and cheating. We had to take him out. It's true that we should have been more heavy-handed following the aftermaths of the war. Who would have thought that the Iraqi people would have been so weak so as to not be able to govern themselves effectively and our government so weak in forcing them to do so. There is a total lack of leadership and national pride in Iraq. Maybe this win in soccer will help, but most likely it will be forgotten very soon.
We cannot effectively help the Iraqis until they have the courage to help themselves.

A superpower in medieval times, by the 20th century it was very much in decay. It went through hell in the last century, but gradually pulled itself together and is now the 4th largest economy in the world. Report as unsuitableThe point is, it's odd that Americans seem to think the state shouldn't interfere in their lives, yet they seem to think the US state should interfere constantly in the lives of people in other countrys.
My dearest damon,
First, you are correct that in the United States there are about 30,000 firearm related deaths each year, but you failed to state that over half of those are suicides. The suicide rate in the US is less than Switzerland, Korea, Poland, Ireland (the country with no military), Germany, France, Cuba (Michael Moore's healthcare sweetheart), China, Canada, and many many others.
I don't blame you though, because you just followed the lead of others with your beliefs by stating a fact that makes things seem one way, when they are, when put in context of the US population, not nearly as bad.
Second, you analysis of the bullet falling is completely wrong. A falling object will reach a terminal velocity, which is not the same speed that it is fired at. An AK47 has a muzzle velocity of about 780 m/s. It's terminal velocity is about 90 m/s.
A study performed by the united states military shows that in order to cause a lethal wound it would have to have about twice as much force when it was at it's terminal velocity. Hence, it is extremely unlikely to be fatal for even one person, let alone a few. The chances of that happening are worse than your chances of winning the lottery a couple of times in a row.
Third, pride is not a bad thing. Having no pride is. Once you lose your pride, you have nothing to live for.
Stoos out.

Report as unsuitableA drop of water is not a solid object. It is shaped by the fall and that is the reason that it has a point to begin with, in a vaccum it has no point, where as a bullet still does.

That's quite clever, first time I read that, I thought it said the gun deaths rate was lower than all those countries.
Report as unsuitable" they seem to think the US state should interfere constantly in the lives of people in other countrys."
Richardinho - I doubt very few Americans want our country to constantly "interfere" in the lives of peoples of other countries. You seem pretty quick to generalize the thoughts of 250 million+.
Care to tell us where you are from?
Report as unsuitableThat isn't what I was saying, but I just looked it up for you since I am on a fact finding trip, and here is what I found.
The US has the 8th highest homicide rate at 0.0279271 people murdered per 1000. To put it in context that is about 0.02 more than Germany and about .026 more than England.
So per million people there are 28 murders in the US. Granted it seems like a lot, but I don't know how to interpret these numbers when you take into account the much larger population in a much much larger area. I would assume that in a smaller more crowded country murder would be avoided because of the simple fact that it would seem harder to get away with it, but that is just an assumption. I have nothing to back that up.

"there is enough anti-Americanism and gung-ho crap on this thread without history being rewritten."
The poster you mock is correct. The poster’s point was one that should have been apparent to you. The British were decimated during WWII and were holding on for dear life. They were in no position to really even survive let alone defeat the Japanese. This role FELL upon the United States, the role of western superpower. Simply because she (THE USA) was not only not badly damaged at home (not at all really), but she was tuned into the urgency of the day and reaping major rewards from the needs of the ever faster sinking Allies. She had the willingness and capacity to reverse the downward spiral with her entry into the Second World War, and reverse it she did with the sacrifice of her sons and her treasure.
That all being understood, had the USA not prevailed in the Pacific Hong Kong would have been lost forEVER. Accepting that fact, the USA saved Hong Kong's butt pure and simple. Oh along with Hong Kong we can add a long list; United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and a myriad of Pacific Islands. Eventually even Hungry and Poland. There are more but I think the point is made.
I ask you; who is rewriting history?

Report as unsuitableThis is a great moment and what I believe is a very small sample of what is to come for the future of Iraq and the Middle East.
What boggles my mind is that the captain of the soccer team chose to take this opportunity to publicly express his desire to see America leave Iraq rather than expressing his opposition to the terrorist car bombers. Or was the black armband supposed to give the terrorists a stern message?
Sarcasm aside, the captain could have taken this momentous opportunity to publicly denounce the real enemies killing their bretheren everyday. Can someone (liberal or conservative) tell me why Iraqis, Muslims, Arabs, etc. refuse to make public outcries against the atrocity and stupidity of terrorists and, instead, decide to denounce the U.S.?
Sure, the U.S. is NOT perfect. We have big, grand, bold ideas and visions and we take action. We screw up along the way. But this should not deminish the idea - the vision. Debate is good. Time will tell.
Either way, I say F&!#%& the terrorists - not the U.S.
Report as unsuitableMany of my fellow American posters are sincere but quite misled by our state controlled mainstream media pro-war propaganda brainwashing machine, and in the end are victims too (but not as bad as Iraqis), in an unknowing way being used as the instruments of imperialistic death and destruction under the false flag of liberation and justice, a sad cruel joke on all concerned. And I say all this as a lifelong conservative for those caught up in "righty vs leftie" game.
Needed is understanding who our leadership ruling class really is, which is more like organized crime. Bush for example is Skull and Bones who celebrate death in a way unimaginable for us. 911 was a complete inside job. Al Qaeda is a total myth so are suicide bombers. Ricardinho sadly has it right, we are the real terrorists and imperialism is our aim. We are misled to patriotically march off to faraway wars for reasons we have no real concept of, though we may think we do but we really don’t, but such is the power of lies. I congratulate the Iraqi team and their captain.
Report as unsuitableThat's absolutely brilliant nonwo. 9/11 was an inside job ? You are conservative ? State Controlled mainstream media, pro-war propaganda, brainwashing machine ?
Do you care to provide an ounce of proof to all your outlandish claims ?
That is all so wrong on so many fronts. First off, if the current administration has a non-hostile ally in the media, its with Foxnews and that's it.
And secondly, if you are a lifelong conservative then Osama Bin Laden is a closet jew.
