Yahoo! Go for Windows Mobile released
August 30, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Employees of Yahoo Mobile for years were simply hostile against Microsoft, claiming on their blogs, that Symbian is the holy grail and claiming literally (!) that Microsoft is evil. Then we visited stand of Yahoo at 3GSM 2006 conference (the biggest about mobile phones in the world), where Yahoo was showing Yahoo! Go for Symbian, and employee of Yahoo Mobile USA - Dag Norem - treated us in a very rude and hostile way - once he learned, that we come from pro-Microsoft publication!

Now all of this anti-Microsoft hostility must be gone because Yahoo has just released Yahoo! Go for Windows Mobile with broader support than for Symbian: while Yahoo! Go is available only for Symbian S60 but not for Symbian UIQ, the Yahoo! Go for Windows Mobile is available for all Windows Mobile versions, including Pocket PC, Smartphone, Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0!

Final proof that Windows Mobile phones are mainstream is in place!

Yahoo Go! works in both Windows Mobile for Pocket PC and for smartphone, as you can see here:

Yahoo Go! for Windows Mobile delivers:
  • Contacts - Stored phone numbers are automatically synched
  • Photos - Take a picture and it's stored online
  • (NOT YET for Windows Mobile) Messenger - Record voice instant messages
  • Mail - Get notified when new email arrives
Requirements for Yahoo! Go on Windows Mobile:
  • Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition or Windows Mobile 5.0
  • 4MB available space on your mobile device’s internal memory
  • Internet access (e.g. via GPRS, EDGE, 3G, EV-DO, WLAN, etc.)
  • Wireless data plan
Related FAQ from Yahoo:

How do I know which version of Windows Mobile I have?

You can check Start - > Settings -> About to determine which operating system you have. It is important that you select the correct version in order for us to provide you with the correct version of the Yahoo! Go software.

Why do I need Internet access (e.g. via GPRS, EDGE, 3G, EV-DO, WLAN)?

Yahoo! Go uses an Internet connection to keep your personal Yahoo! stuff – Mail, Contacts, Photos, etc. – always up-to-date on your mobile device.

Why do I need a wireless data plan?

Although there’s currently no charge from Yahoo! to use Yahoo! Go, you will be charged by your wireless network provider for data traffic costs. Consider subscribing to a high-volume or unlimited data plan to minimize costs. Check with your wireless provider for options.

Interestingly users can install Yahoo! Go both with EXE setup program for Windows XP (over ActiveSync) and over the air (OTA) with CAB file installation (CAB file is copied to the device and opened there), available installation methods:
  • Automatic installation with Microsoft ActiveSync (RECOMMENDED)
  • Manual installation of .CAB file (Advanced users only)

(on photo above: stand of Yahoo in form of one table - as part of huge Nokia's stand at 3GSM. Once Dag Norem from Yahoo, who was representing Yahoo at this stand, learned that we came from pro-Microsoft publication he started to behave very amateurishly and denied [despite the fact that we were present at 3GSM as accredited press]: taking photos of him, recording the description of Yahoo! Go for podcasting purposes, and generally was rude. We hope that in future Yahoo employees will behave more professionally and stop being so childishly anti-Microsoft! It would be good idea because now Microsoft and Yahoo cooperate - for example in area of interoperability of instant messengers and in area of DRM)
