'Slice', 'Sonata' top critics' awards nominations

A blood-soaked crime thriller and a nostalgic 1970s romantic drama are the top nominees for the Bangkok Critics Assembly awards.

"Slice" ("Cheun") and "October Sonata" ("Rak Tee Ror Koi") are tied with nine nominations each in the 11 categories to be awarded by the critics. Both are up for best film.

Kongkiat Komesiri is nominated for best director and shares a screenwriting nod with Wisit Sasanatieng for "Slice".

Somkiat Vituranich is nominated for director and screenwriting prizes for "October Sonata". Both films also make a sweep of the categories for cinematography, editing, art direction and score.

Arak "Pe" Amornsupasiri, who plays a convict let out of prison to find a serial killer in "Slice", is up for best actor while Ratchawin "Koy" Wongviriya, the tragic heroine in the social-class drama "October Sonata", has a best actress nod.

Another romantic drama that takes place in the 1970s, "A Moment in June" ("Na Khana Rak"), has six nominations, including best actor for Shahkrit Yamnarm, supporting actor for Suchao Pongvilai and supporting actress nods for Deuntem Salitul and Sinitta Boonyasak.

With five nominations is last year's biggest Thai box-office hit, "Bangkok Traffic (Love) Story" ("Rot Fai Faa ... Maha Na Ter"), including best director for Adisorn Trisirikasem and actress for Sirin "Cris" Horwang.

Also with five nods is Pen-ek Ratanaruang's "Nymph" ("Nang Mai"), which is up for best film, director, screenplay, cinematography and actress for Wanida "Gybzy" Termthanaporn.

Other best film nominees are the indie documentary on Deep South violence and politics "Citizen Juling" and the teen drugs drama "Samchuk".

Yongyoot Thongkongtoon is up for best director for "Best of Times" ("Kwaam Jam San Tae Rak Chan Yaao"), which also has a screenplay nomination.

Other best actor nominees are Jirayu La-ongmanee for "Phobia 2" ("Haa Phrang"), Paramej Noiam in "Samchuk" and Pitisak Yaowanan from "In Country Melody 2" ("E-Som Somwang Cha Cha Cha")

Chutima Teepanat from "Dear Galileo" ("Nee Tam Galileo") and Siriwimol "Mai" Charoenpura from "Meat Grinder" ("Cheuad Gon Chim") are best actress nominees.

 Comedians Jarernporn "Kohtee Aramboy" Onlamaai and Choosak "Nong Chachacha" Iamsuk are both up for supporting-actor prizes in "32 Thunwa".

Pisanu Nimsakul is nominated for "October Sonata" and child actor Attapan Poolsawasdi is recognised for his gruelling portrayal of a troubled boy in "Slice".

Other supporting actress nominations go to Jarinporn Junkiat ("Dear Galileo"), Chontorn Prachyarungrot ("Mor 3 Pee 4 Rao Rak Naa") and Marsha Wattanapanich ("Phobia 2").

The childhood drama "The Happiness of Kati" ("Kwam Suk Kong Kati"), based on the SeaWrite Award-winning novel by Jane Vejjajiva, is nominated for cinematography, art direction and score.

And the muay thai-basketball action drama "Fireball" ("Taa/Chon") is up for screenplay honours, along with best editing.

The awards ceremony is set for March 9 at the Royal Thai Army Auditorium.
